Polymorphic i-Phone App

The G.D.S. collaborated with Nettrice Gaskins & Lyssa Palu-Ay from the Studio Foundation Dept. at Massart to develop an i-Phone application to accompany the Polymorphic gallery exhibit. Students involved in the project worked feverously despite our burden of scholastic obligations.

Using professional development tools and our Lynda.com accounts Nettrice helped the group to develop our way through gritty models of the tool as well as the attitude! At the end of the day a Polymorphic i-Phone app would be a difficult project to see through; all the way to the app-store. All parties involved benefitted from the experience and the G.D.S. looks forward to working alongside other student/faculty projects in the future.

Chaz Maviyane-Davies Speaks In Beverly

The other day G.D.S. Went to see our beloved professor Chaz Maviyane Davies speak at Endicott College way out in Beverly, MA. The weather was unforgiving, the commute lengthy, and the in-trainsit music was lacking; but upon our arrival at snowy Endicott we were greeted with a warm reception, plenty of fatty snacks, and a jubilant Chaz distributing copies of the poster he'd designed for the event.

Several MassArt student's works were on display along side Chaz's, among them: Cedric Douglass, Jessica DeJesus (both pictured below), RJ Foley, {let me know if I'm missing your name here- I'll augment it}. We also met Kathleen Moore, the coordinator of visal arts around those parts, who had nothing but smiles for us.

Chaz spoke of his experiences in, and frustrations with, his home Zimbabwe. He also spoke, more in prose, of his experiences with graphic design, and humored us with some anecdotes of early deadlines and quick thinking. His presentation was very articulate and smooth, but what were most affecting, were his words on the present situation in Zimbabwe and how circumstances there spured his coming to America. I believe this segment was titled 'Dissent'. One can immagine how difficult it must have been to put some of the things he spoke of to words.

The auditorium had a lot of people in it, there were no technical problems to be spoken of. We had a really good time, or at least I did, but I'm the one chronicling this for posterity so WE had a good time, damnit.

A Reception Of the Finest Type

The Type Show was a success! An abundance of interest and a lack of technical issues contributed to a dynamite reception, where guests were treated to finger-foods and the much anticipated 'Tang Fountain'. Of course the food was no competition for the magnificent display of typographic artworks.

On display for less than two weeks, due to the show's unique location, and displayed in its entirety for only one night, due to fire restrictions, the Type Show has now been completely dismantled and exists now only in our photographs and in our minds. Thank you to all who participated, exhibited, and had the time to view Mass Art's Graphic Design Society's Type Show.

"type Show" this Friday!

Come to the "type Show" this Friday December 4th on the 6th floor of Mass Art's Tower building (621 Huntington ave.)

There will be food, refreshments, live (recorded) music, and of course some amazing works of art to enjoy.

Type / Hand Lettering Themed Show: Call For Art!

The GDS is going to be putting on a gallery show in late November featuring artworks which feature lettering or typography. All mediums of work are accepted from all departments.

Artworks must be submitted digitally to GDS@Massart.edu before November 15th.

So whip your digital camera out, snap some shots of your favorite 2d 3d or time-based artworks that feature creative use of letterforms and email them to us !

If your artwork is selected you must be able to produce the piece, ready to be hung/displayed no later than 5 days after the work has been accepted.

$200 Budget/Hello newcomers!

Hello folks, this is the first post on the new Graphic Design Society (G.D.S.) blog.

We're a group of students at the Massachusetts Colleg of Art and Design in Boston, MA.

We take a special interest in graphic deisgn, and have come together to perpetuate its appreciation and practice in our community here in Boston, MA.

This first post will be about how our budget has been cut from 1700 dollars (or seventeen hundred dollars) to 200 dollars (or two one-hundred dollar bills).

We're determined to earn a larger budget by impressing the Massart/College of the Fenway Schools by showing what we can do with $200.

First we will host a late Novermber gallery show themed around Typography and Hand Lettering. And later we will be going on a design firm tour around Boston open to GDS members.

We're also open for freelance work, for no compensation. All money would go into the production of the finished materials. Contact at GDS@Massart.edu.
